Holy shit, this video is nuts. MIA obviously has no interest in tempering government perception of alleged terrorist leanings. Just because your dad (who she’s never met) is a Tamil Tiger does not make you a terrorist, but the Feds felt enough suspicion in her vague lyrics to deny her a visa to the states a couple years back. Well this video for “Born Free”, in which a shadowy US special ops team rounds up red-heads to kill them in a remote desert mass grave, sure isn’t going to do wonders for her mainstream PR. You gotta love Maya Arulpragasam’s relentless independence — girl really puts her money where her mouth is. Last week she’s blowing up Lady Gaga for being a safe, corporate-sponsored derivative, and this week she’s blowing up gingers in a not-too-disguised metaphor for Muslims/Palestinians/outcasts. Last week a blimp overhead Coachella announced the release date of her new album (June 29th), signaling the beginning of the hype for what will surely be a very anticipated 3rd round from M.I.A. If this is the heat that she’s gonna be bringing this summer, bring the 150 SPF sunscreen to her HARD shows this July (Los Angeles on July 17 and New York on July 24)…
