Conceptual artist Hans-Peter Feldman is important. So important in fact that he was named the recipient of the Hugo Boss Prize last November — a bi-annual award presented to artists who make significant achievements in contemporary art. Attached to winning the award, the German artist received $100,000. In a stroke of artistic inspiration, Feldman — who’s been creating art for more than 50 years — decided to install a piece of artwork that would show just how important or “big” he is. “At that time there was no money in the art world. Money and art didn’t exist. So for me $100,000 is very special. It’s incredible really. And I would like to show the quantity of it,” explains Feldman. So art handlers at the Guggenheim Museum in New York spent roughly 13 days tacking on the out-of-circulation $1 bills to the wall of the large gallery off the Frank Lloyd Wright ramp. Because of the quantity of bills, they had to overlap and hang vertically to reduce the amount of needed pins. The $100,000 Gallery exhibition will be up until November 2, 2011.
