Australia's latest purveyors of all things indie disco

Following in the disco-infused indie rock of its Aussie compatriots Cut/Copy, Midnight Juggernauts and Empire of the Sun comes Strange Talk, who just released their self-titled debut EP on Neon Gold Records. The first single from the record, “Climbing Walls”, shimmers with all the swagger, melody, rhythm and background vocal textures that have made Australia the flagbearers of the indie disco sound, and should prove to make Strange Talk as much a commodity here as their predecessors from Down Under. We caught up with the band when they played Los Angeles’ The Satellite, and the band showed they can dish it live with the best of their countrymen. Lead vocalist Gerard Sidhu was kind enough to answer some questions, and below is what he had to say about Freddie Mercury’s dental work, the power of the cheeky grin and his disaffection for all cleaning products.

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
Gerard Sidhu from the band Strange Talk.

You can find me in…
Fiztroy Victoria, Australia, usually posted up at Black Pearl.

You might’ve heard of me because…
I’m in a band called Strange Talk.

But why you really should know me is…
My band’s amazing song ‘ Climbing Walls’

If it wasn’t for my mother I wouldn’t be where I am today

The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
“Black or White” by Michael Jackson

The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears is…
“Techno Fan” by The Wombats

I hate to admit it, but I almost gave music up when…
My lung collapsed.

But it all came together when…
Two weeks out of hospital one of our songs got picked up on radio in Australia

If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, the one person I’d want to share the cabin with would be…
Freddie Mercury, I would ask him what why after making so money he didn’t get his teeth fixed.

If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Give me a perfectly cooked chicken parmagiana.

If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
Forget the cheese on the parmagiana!

The last time I saw the sun come up…
I was in Los Angeles on Saturday last week, sitting on the roof of the Roosevelt.

The person I admire most is…
Michael Jackson

The last time I lied was…
About the hotel mini-bar, it was empty when I got there!

If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Michael Bolton.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
Michael Bolton.

When I get my first really big check, I’m gonna go score…
A house.

But it’ll never replace…
A home cooked meal from mum.

My one magic power is…
A cheeky grin.

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
All the great people we’ve met in LA this week.

And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me in…
The furthest aisle from the cleaning products.
