35 years after the fact, one of the most iconic and influential albums in music history still sounds as powerful and singular as ever. Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols changed the landscape for the music industry, and was the only official album released by the Sex Pistols while bassist Sid Vicious was a member of the group. Nevermind the band was essentially manufactured by Malcolm McLaren with the same calculated efficiency that Maurice Starr assembled New Kids On the Block — the Sex Pistols truly created a distinctive sound, and their album’s impact strongly resonates with artists and aficionados to this day. It only makes sense to celebrate its 35th anniversary, and Universal Music UK has done just that in assembling a super-deluxe box set release that does this watershed album justice.
Now what’s left in the Sex Pistols vault that hasn’t already been seen or heard ad nauseum, you might ask? Well, fans will be happy to hear there’s a treasure trove of music, footage, interviews, rare photos and other ephemera that is confirmed to be included in the NMTBHSP Super-Deluxe box set. But most importantly, the set will also include the original master tapes from the 1977 Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols recording sessions that were thought to be lost for many years. Thankfully, in the recent move from Virginia Records to Universal Music Catalogue in January of this year the tapes were unearthed — easily one of the bigger musicologist finds of the 21st century. Now, under direction from original producer Chris Thomas, the tapes have been completely remastered for the very first time. The gem that will perhaps excite fans most is the lost 1977 demo studio recording of “Belsen Was a Gas”, the only original Sex Pistols composition of the era thought not to be recorded. Other coveted artifacts include replica stickers, posters and singles, plus a 1977 Diary 100 page hardback book filled with quotes, rare and previously unseen photos, memorabilia and exclusive images. The Never Mind the Bollocks, It’s the Sex Pistols: 35th Anniversary Super Deluxe Box Set is scheduled for release on September 24th in the UK.
