Australian label Thrills teams up with Queensland-based artist and ceramicist Dan Elborne on a beautiful series of porcelain skulls and accompanying bullets, all embellished with original scorpion floral artwork done by Thrills. As Thrills explains:
“Dan has created a menacing contradiction between beauty and horror, juxtaposing the aesthetic beauty of porcelain and embellishment with the horrors of war, further reflected by the scorpion lurking within the floral artwork.”
If you’re into porcelain skulls, you should also peep the intricately detailed Mythological Ceramic Skulls of Katsuyo Aoki. The idea of skulls as art is well worn, of course, from Hiroshi’s Skull Sculpture to Our Exquisite Corpse’s Huichol-beaded skulls, never mind their appropriation by everyone from Alexander McQueen to mastermind Japan (there’s even a book documenting the influence on skulls in fashion and art, titled aptly The Book of Skulls.) Still, these works by Elborne are beautiful to ogle. The skulls and bullets are another chapter in the continuation of his ongoing Human Condition series, and all are slip cast porcelain, glazed and decorated with scorpion floral artwork. Only four of the skulls will be made, at a cost of about $250 ($280 AUD) for the skull and $130 ($150 AUD) for the .303 bullets.
