If you’re unaware of Scraper Bikes, it’s basically a homegrown scene in the Bay Area/Oakland where kids modify the hell outta their bikes. The most fundamental mod is to affix tin foil to the wheels so they look like chromed out car rims, as well as copious spray painting and other alterations. While sometimes mocked and even persecuted, the Scraper Bike Movement itself has some very positive aspects to it, the very least keeping kids in troubled communities focused on something healthy and creative. What’s there not to like about that? They claim to “capture the creativity of youth living within dangerous communities. It gives them a positive outlet that is fun, educational, and promotes healthy lifestyles. The Scraper Bike Movement offers youth a sustainable group of peers that is positive and motivating.” California is the Place has made a short doc about the scene’s leader, Baybe Champ, The Scraper Bike King. It’s called Scrapertown, and you can peep it below. The Scraper Bike King claims: “In order to become a member of the Original Scraper Bike Team, you must: Be a resident of Oakland, CA. Be at least 7 years old or older. Retain A 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), Create your own Scraper Bike…(It Has To Be Amazing, Or Else You Can’t Ride.) A single-file line when riding. After 10 rides The Scraper Bike King and his Captains will decide if your bike is up to standards and if you can follow simple guidelines. After your evaluation we will consider you a member and honor you with an Original Scraper Bike Team Shirt. Only worn when Mobbin’”. Some really dope shit, right there. I like the part about the single file, seems arbitrary but hey, whatever floats your boat Scraper Bike King…
