The replacement for the CL-Class gets its AMG makeover

After unveiling their gorgeous 2015 S-Class Coupe (which we posted last month), Mercedes-Benz lifts the sheets on AMG’s makeover of the car. Due to be revealed at the New York Auto Show next month, Benz was kind enough to give the people what they want a couple weeks early. Developed to replace the CL-Class, the S-Class Coupe is a truly stunning piece of machinery — a powerfully proportioned GT that sits firmly on the Tristar’s design “hits” side of the ledger (as opposed to, say, the piecemeal-looking SL). And of course the AMG version, the S63 Coupe, is only more breathtaking. Besides the upgrade in fascia, ground effects and forged-alloy wheels, the Merc gets a burly biturbo 5.5L V8 that generates a supercar-worthy 577-horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque — that’s good enough to boost the car from 0-to-60 in under four seconds (3.9 seconds to be precise), on way to a 186-mph top speed. That’s a significant improvement from the base S-Class Coupe’s 4.7L V8’s 449 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. As described in the name, the S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe will also feature Benz’s superb 4Matic AWD system, AIRMATIC air-suspension and optional ceramic brakes. Although premiering at the New York Auto Show, the S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe won’t be hitting showrooms till autumn of this year.
