We live in Southern California, a place totally bereft of snow except on our tallest mountain ranges. We do have Glamis, however, home of a Mad Max-like world where sand rails, dirt bikes, quads and 4x4s rule the land with a mighty fist. This is where the Platune Sand-X would steal the show. Essentially a snowmobile with wheels in front in place of skis , the Sand-X has a top speed of 115 mph and accelerates to 62mph in just 2.8 seconds…on sand??? Seems hard to believe.
Built as a collaboration between the American company Platune and Sand-X — a Swiss company specializing in off-road vehicles — the Sand-X is powered by a Rotax 800 cc, 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine which develops 160 horsepower. Built for weekend warriors and outdoor enthusiasts, the vehicle is apparently being bought by desert-based militaries and border patrols. Beats the hell outta sweating your ass off in a Hummer all day…
