In what is easily my happiest moment of fanboy geekdom since discovering that Space Battleship Yamato (aka Starblazers) movie, it was leaked this week that David Fincher is in the works to make a real to life Gaiking movie. As if that wasn’t enough, the film is being used as a launching pad to start a whole franchise, to be titled Shogun Warriors. How many awesome words can you possibly fit into one sentence? Fincher + Gaiking = Shogun Warriors franchise. Insert drool falling from ecstasy-quivering lip. As exclusively reported on AICN, “We talked about how the film isn’t just set on Earth, but on other planets in the universe. At one point, ‘We’ll have more Shogun Warriors than ever appeared in the Marvel Comics’…But the key is – they’re taking what (David) Fincher told them to heart. David told Jules that he has to make sure to tell a great story, above and beyond what great tech they use for the robots.” Aaaah, Fincher, god bless you. Another great filmmaker who, like say James Cameron, believes that to be a great film — even in the flashy CGI-laden sci-fi or action genres — you need a great story as the foundation (Michael Bay, Brett Ratner, McG: you may want to be taking notes right now). But that’s not all. They’re reporting that in addition to CG, they will be building life size Shogun Warriors.
Life. Size. Shogun. Warriors.
