Methods and trends in timekeeping have seen many about faces throughout its history. And now Assouline adds The Impossible Collection of Watches 2014 compendium documenting this history into an extensive volume. Much like the excellent Impossible Collection Of Motorcycles book, written by LIAS contributor Nicolas Stecher, the Impossible Collection of Watches aims to bring together the best of the 20th century into one singular guide. In this case historian, author, journalist and all-around expert on the subject of watches, Nicholas Foulkes, has selected the 100 most breakthrough timepieces of the past century and complied them into a narrative of chonographs that together define history. Having already shown segments at the CBGB Festival in New York this month, Salad Days documents an era and location that was pivotal to not only punk rock, but to the indie movement of do-it-yourself record labels itself. Washington DC-raised director Scott Crawford and DC DP Jim Saah deliver the story of the capitol’s pivotal and hugely seminal punk bands such as Bad Brains, Minor Threat and Fugazi, in a project so readily received that it hit its Kickstarter goal in six days. Other perks include interviews with Henry Rollins and Thurston Moore. While much fuss has been made of the pre-Nirvana age of music, The Salad Days: Decade of Punk In Washington, DC  (1980-90) documentary sets it self apart being the first to really focus on the importance of Washington D.C. to punk-rock history.

Chics in Design is a Hong Kong-based design house that has come with a specific, limited-color-palette knitting pattern for a distinctive look to their household furnishings. Surely by no coincidence, the recent remastered re-release of nine of Led Zeppelin’s albums comes in time with this scarf collaboration with UK designer Paul Smith. The highly limited-edition scarves each measure 1.5 x 1.5m, the first three being the covers for the Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin III albums. The first was created using an intricate photographic weaving technique where red detail was later added in with a fine fil coupe yarn. Led Zeppelin II was created differently, considering the range of colors, so four different yarns were interwoven carefully to accurately recreate the colorful design. Led Zeppelin III, on the other hand, was made from combining the contrasts of boucle and merino wool. Images haven’t yet been released for the other scarves, but word has it that both Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy were created using a jacquard-weaving technique. 50 of each design will be available at Paul Smith in London, only, as of October 23rd. So you’ll have to knit a stairway to England if you expect to get one.
